In summer 2010, I bought a stunning candle—a bust of the Buddha, pearl white and 12" tall by 12" wide at the base. With his head bowed and his eyes closed, the Buddha is peace. The following New Year, I created this blog to share something beautiful every week until this candle has burned through. Finding the time to meditate to burn this candle is hard, let alone photographing/ posting on a weekly basis. But I have made this vow to myself, because beauty persists in this world, no matter what.

New Year's Eve
It's 9:24pm on December 31, 2011. My husband and two sons are at a New Year's Eve party, and I plan to join them there shortly. I have just finished meditating. Here is the Buddha candle before I started burning it.
You may wonder why I would want to burn such a beautiful candle. Have you ever heard the expression "If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him"? In my case, I am meeting the Buddha in my four-season porch and burning him. At first, this may sound violent, harsh, wrong. But it isn't what you may think.
And here is the candle after an hour and a half of meditation. I was surprised at how little the candle burned after so much time. I noticed the wax running down the Buddha's forhead. Will he cry during my next meditation?
